And honestly, this is where things can get confusing.

A complete crawl space encapsulation system typically involves more than just putting plastic on the ground.

Depending on your crawl space, your crawl space encapsulation supplies may include:

How Much Crawl Space Encapsulation Material Do I Actually Need?

Here's the quick version:

Step 1: Measure Your Crawl Space

Before ordering crawl space encapsulation material, you need a few basic measurements.

At minimum, I recommend knowing:

  • The square footage of the crawl space floor
  • The linear footage of your foundation walls
  • The height of the foundation walls
  • The number of support pillars or piers
  • Whether the crawl space has multiple sections
  • Whether you're encapsulating the floor, walls, or both

Start With the Floor

For a simple rectangular crawl space:

Length × Width = Floor Square Footage

For example:

40 ft × 30 ft = 1,200 sq. ft.

But don't stop there.

Your walls and support pillars also require material, which is why ordering based solely on the floor's square footage can leave you short.


Step 2: How Much Crawl Space Vapor Barrier Do I Need?

Your crawl space vapor barrier is one of the biggest material requirements in an encapsulation project.

You'll want to account for the floor area as well as any foundation walls you're covering.

For walls, measure the linear footage of the wall and multiply it by the wall height.

For example:

40 linear feet × 3 ft wall height = 120 sq. ft. of wall area

You'll also want to account for overlaps, corners, cuts, and installation requirements.

That guide is worth using before you place your order, especially if your crawl space isn't a simple rectangle.


Step 3: How Much Seam Tape Do I Need?

This is one of the questions we hear all the time:

"How much seam tape do I need for my crawl space?"

As a general rule of thumb, we recommend:

1 roll of 4" × 180' seam tape for every 250 square feet of crawl space.

For example:

1,000 sq. ft. ÷ 250 = 4 rolls

So a 1,000-square-foot crawl space would start with approximately 4 rolls of seam tape.

However, that's not the whole story.

Don't Forget Your Support Pillars

We also recommend adding approximately:

1 additional roll of seam tape for every 4 support pillars.

Your actual usage can vary depending on the layout of your crawl space and how many cuts and seams are required.

Think of it like drywall: the more cuts you have to make, the more material you're going to use.

When in doubt, it's better to have a little extra seam tape than to be halfway through your encapsulation project and realize you need another roll.


Step 4: How Much Butyl Tape Do I Need?

Butyl tape serves a different purpose than seam tape.

Seam tape is used to seal overlaps between pieces of vapor barrier. Butyl tape is used to help secure the vapor barrier to the foundation before mechanically fastening it.

For estimating butyl tape, our rule of thumb is based on the linear footage of the areas being secured.

A simple way to estimate it is:

Total linear footage ÷ 75 = approximate number of rolls

You'll also want to account for the additional surface area around support pillars.

If you have a lot of pillars, corners, or complicated foundation walls, your actual usage can be higher.


Step 5: How Much Insulated Vapor Barrier Do I Need?

If you're using an insulated vapor barrier such as Insul-Barrier, the calculation is a little different.

For wall applications, you'll want to account for the linear footage of the walls and the height you're covering, while also allowing approximately 6–12 inches of ground overlap.

A basic starting point is:

Linear Feet × Wall Height = Wall Square Footage

The additional ground overlap needs to be accounted for when determining how much material to purchase.

Because wall height and installation methods can vary considerably, this is another area where having your measurements available makes a big difference.


Step 6: Don't Forget Support Pillars

Support pillars are one of the easiest things to forget when estimating your crawl space encapsulation supplies.

A crawl space with 1,000 square feet of floor space and no pillars is a very different project from a 1,000-square-foot crawl space with 15 or 20 support pillars.

Pillars can require:

  • Additional vapor barrier
  • Additional seam tape
  • Additional butyl tape
  • Additional fasteners

So when you're building your materials list, count your pillars.

Step 7: What About Fasteners?

Once your vapor barrier is positioned against the foundation wall, you'll need a way to mechanically secure it.

Common crawl space encapsulation installations use fasteners through the vapor barrier and butyl tape into the foundation.

The exact number of fasteners you'll need depends on:

  • Wall length
  • Installation method
  • Foundation type
  • Spacing
  • Number of pillars
  • How much vapor barrier you're installing

Because of those variables, I wouldn't recommend trying to calculate your entire fastener quantity from one universal formula.

Instead, measure the areas you're fastening and plan around your installation method.


Step 8: What About Vent Sealing and Rim Joist Insulation?

A proper encapsulation project can involve more than covering the floor.

Depending on your crawl space, you may also need to address:

Foundation Vents

Open foundation vents can allow outside air and moisture into the crawl space. If your encapsulation plan calls for closing them, you'll need the appropriate crawl space vent sealing materials.

Rim Joists

The rim joist is another important area to address during a crawl space insulation project. Your wall insulation can help block heat and cold transfer through the foundation walls, but if the rim joists are left unsealed or uninsulated, temperature transfer can still occur through those areas.

Think of your crawl space insulation as a complete system. Insulating the walls while leaving gaps around the rim joists is like leaving a window cracked open while trying to heat the room. Addressing the rim joists helps complete the thermal barrier around the crawl space.


Step 9: Do I Need a Crawl Space Dehumidifier?

If you're dealing with moisture, humidity, musty odors, or mold concerns in your crawl space, humidity control needs to be a priority.

A dehumidifier is what actively removes moisture from that air and helps maintain a controlled humidity level. A vapor barrier helps keep moisture out but it doesn't remove the humidity already in the air. That's the dehumidifier's job.

Think about it this way: you can install a beautiful crawl space encapsulation system with a vapor barrier, sealed walls, insulated materials, and properly sealed vents but if you don't control the humidity inside that sealed space, you've essentially created a very expensive Ziploc bag full of humid air.

That's why we consider the dehumidifier one of the most important components of a complete crawl space moisture-control system.

Humidity Is the Enemy

If your crawl space has:

  • High humidity
  • Musty smells
  • Excess moisture
  • Condensation
  • Mold or conditions that can contribute to mold growth

you need to address the humidity not simply cover up the problem.

The goal of encapsulation isn't just to make the crawl space look clean. The goal is to create a controlled environment where moisture and humidity can be managed.

A properly installed crawl space vapor barrier helps stop moisture from the ground. Sealing vents and other openings helps limit outside moisture. But the dehumidifier actively removes moisture from the air and helps maintain your target relative humidity.

That's why we generally recommend maintaining crawl space humidity around 45–50% RH.

So, Is a Dehumidifier Technically an Encapsulation Material?

Not exactly We consider the dehumidifier its own part of the moisture-control system, but it's arguably one of the most important parts.

You can spend thousands of dollars on crawl space encapsulation materials. Don't forget the thing that's actually removing the moisture from the air.

Bottom line: The vapor barrier helps keep moisture out. The dehumidifier helps take control of the moisture that's in the air. You need both working together to maintain a truly controlled crawl space.
