DIY Crawl Space Encapsulation Kit - Up to 1,500 Sq. Ft.

This kit is designed around a typical crawl space of approximately 1,500 square feet, using the following dimensions as a starting point:

  • Floor area: Approximately 1,500 sq. ft.

  • Support pillars: Approximately 5 pillars

  • Foundation walls: Approximately 3–5 feet tall

Every crawl space is different, and these measurements are guidelines—not strict limits. If your crawl space is 1,600 sq. ft., has six pillars, or differs slightly from these dimensions, that doesn't automatically mean this kit won't work for you.

What matters most is whether the included materials provide enough coverage for your specific layout. The kit contains 2,000 sq. ft. of 12-mil solid vapor barrier for the floor and pillars, plus 500 sq. ft. of Insul-Barrier® insulated vapor barrier for the foundation walls. Actual installed coverage will vary based on wall height, overlaps, cuts, pillars, and installation methods.

Before ordering, measure your crawl space and compare your material requirements with the quantities included. If you're unsure, send Crawl Space Ninja Supply (DIY@crawlspaceninja.com) your measurements, pictures, or floor plan, and we'll help you determine whether this kit is a good fit or if you need additional materials.

If you've been researching DIY crawl space encapsulation and thinking, “Okay... what the heck do I actually need?” we put this kit together for you.

The Crawl Space Ninja Complete DIY Encapsulation Kit brings together the core crawl space encapsulation materials needed for a typical project, including crawl space vapor barrier, insulated vapor barrier, vapor barrier seam tape, butyl tape, foundation fasteners, foundation vent covers, closed-cell spray foam, mold and mildew cleaner, and a crawl space dehumidifier.

Instead of spending hours figuring out which products work together and what you forgot to add to your cart, we've done the homework for you

How the Materials Work Together

DIY crawl space encapsulation is easier when you approach the project in the right order. Here's how the materials in this kit fit into the process.

1. Clear Out the Crawl Space

Start by removing debris, old fiberglass insulation, the existing vapor barrier, and other trash from the crawl space. Clearing out the area gives you room to work and helps prepare the foundation, floor, and support structures for the next steps.

2. Remediate Mold and Begin Controlling Humidity

If mold is present, address it before installing your new encapsulation materials. Apply YCS Mold & Mildew Cleaner according to the product instructions, and properly remove the affected material and residue.

Remember, dead mold can still trigger allergic reactions, so killing mold is not the same as removing it.

During this process, run the included Crawl Space Ninja® Dry Pro 70 Dehumidifier when conditions and installation requirements allow. Beginning humidity control early helps reduce moisture in the air and can help the crawl space dry out before you install the final materials.

3. Seal the Foundation Vents

Install the included foundation vent covers and use closed-cell spray foam as appropriate to seal gaps around them. Sealing existing vents helps limit the entry of humid outdoor air and other unwanted outside air into the crawl space.

4. Insulate the Foundation Walls

Install Insul-Barrier® insulated vapor barrier along the foundation walls using the recommended installation method. Insul-Barrier serves as both insulation and a vapor barrier, so you don't need separate foam board insulation for the walls when using this system. With the appropriate air gap and recommended installation, the wall system can achieve an installed R-value of up to R-12.

5. Install the Crawl Space Vapor Barrier

Install the 12-mil solid crawl space vapor barrier across the ground and around support pillars. Use the included seam tape to seal overlapping sections and butyl tape where appropriate for transitions and attachment points. Properly sealing seams and connections helps limit moisture vapor entering from the soil.

Important: This sequence covers the core encapsulation steps for a crawl space that does not require additional water management. If you have standing water, active leaks, or drainage problems, address those conditions as part of your project plan before proceeding with encapsulation.

Frequently Asked Questions About DIY Crawl Space Encapsulation

Why does a crawl space encapsulation kit need a dehumidifier?

A crawl space vapor barrier helps limit moisture entering from the ground, but it doesn't remove humidity already in the air. A crawl space dehumidifier actively removes airborne moisture and helps maintain controlled humidity after encapsulation. That's why this kit includes the Crawl Space Ninja® Dry Pro 70 to support long-term crawl space moisture control.

Why does this kit use Insul-Barrier instead of foam board insulation?

Insul-Barrier® is an insulated vapor barrier designed for foundation walls. It serves as both insulation and a vapor barrier, so this kit uses it instead of separate rigid foam board insulation on the walls. When installed using the recommended wall system with the appropriate air gap, it can achieve an installed R-value of up to R-12.

Why are two types of vapor barrier included?

The materials serve different purposes. The 12-mil solid crawl space vapor barrier is intended for the floor and support pillars, while Insul-Barrier® is used on the foundation walls for insulation and vapor control. Together, they address ground moisture and the foundation walls as part of a more complete crawl space encapsulation system.

Why does crawl space encapsulation require both seam tape and butyl tape?

Seam tape and butyl tape serve different purposes during vapor barrier installation. Seam tape seals overlapping sections of vapor barrier, while double-sided butyl tape helps secure and seal the material against foundation surfaces before mechanical fastening. Using the appropriate tape in the appropriate areas helps create a more continuous moisture-control barrier.

Why are foundation vent covers and spray foam included?

When the encapsulation plan calls for closing existing foundation vents, vent covers help seal those openings against outside air and moisture. Closed-cell spray foam can help seal gaps around the covers. Closing the vents is part of creating a controlled crawl space environment, which works alongside the vapor barrier and dehumidifier.

Why is mold and mildew cleaner included in a crawl space encapsulation kit?

Crawl space preparation matters before installing new materials. YCS Mold & Mildew Cleaner is included for cleaning and preparation as part of the encapsulation project. Cleaning alone does not correct the moisture conditions that contribute to mold growth, so moisture sources and humidity must also be addressed. Significant mold problems may require appropriate remediation before encapsulation.

Is a crawl space vapor barrier enough to control moisture?

Not by itself in every situation. A crawl space vapor barrier helps reduce moisture vapor entering from exposed soil, but moisture can also enter through open vents, air leaks, and other sources. A complete moisture-control plan may include sealing the foundation, insulating the walls, closing vents where appropriate, and using a properly sized crawl space dehumidifier.

Is this DIY crawl space encapsulation kit right for my home?

This kit is designed around a typical crawl space of up to 1,500 square feet, with up to five support pillars and foundation walls approximately 3–5 feet tall. Your actual crawl space encapsulation materials may vary depending on wall dimensions, layout, drainage needs, and other conditions. If you're unsure whether the included quantities will work for your project, contact Crawl Space Ninja Supply with your measurements, pictures, or floor plan.

How much space does the included Dry Pro 70 dehumidifier cover?

The Crawl Space Ninja® Dry Pro 70 Dehumidifier is designed to provide crawl space humidity control for areas up to 2,200 square feet. It removes up to 71 pints of moisture per day under its specified test conditions and helps control humidity after encapsulation.
